Crystal River was incorporated in 1903 and remains a small city — 3,638 residents and about 2,281 housing units, with a median age of 62. What makes it distinctive is the water. Kings Bay is a 600-acre bay at the headwaters of the Crystal River, and the river runs tidal for roughly six miles out to the Gulf. The state park takes its name from the warm spring that draws manatees to the area, which puts Homosassa on the same winter visitor cycle as Crystal River — relevant if you rent a property here, and largely irrelevant if you do not.
